Quran, Sura 15 (al-ḥiǧr) (Codex Parisino-petropolitanus)
Introduction
Sura 15 (al-ḥiǧr) as preserved on 3 folio sides of the Codex Parisino-petropolitanus (Paris, BnF Arabe 328 (a) and (b)), one of the oldest surviving Quran manuscripts, written in hijazi script on parchment, c. 650-750 AD. Each section below is one folio side, and the image shown is that exact page.
- Manuscript scan: the specific folio side from Gallica (Bibliotheque nationale de France IIIF). The folio's sura:verse range was taken from the Corpus Coranicum "Manuscripta Coranica" record for that page, which states the first and last word on the page; the folio numbers of both services were cross-checked by comparing the two images pixel by pixel.
- Original text: the Arabic of the Tanzil Project Uthmani text (CC BY 3.0), reproduced unchanged, verse by verse.
- English: Marmaduke Pickthall, The Meaning of the Glorious Koran (1930), public domain, verse by verse.
Orthography: the codex is written in scriptio defectiva: no vowel signs, almost no consonantal dots, long vowels often unwritten, and letter shapes that differ from the printed Uthmani text. The modern text given here therefore differs orthographically from what is on the folio while conveying the same reading; readers should expect, for example, the basmala and words such as qala to be spelled with fewer letters on the page.
Numbering: verse numbers follow the standard Kufan (Cairo 1924) division used by Corpus Coranicum, Tanzil and Pickthall. Early codices mark verse ends with ink dots that in places divide the text differently, so a verse count made on the page may not match these numbers exactly. In Tanzil's text the basmala opening each sura (except sura 9) is printed as part of verse 1. Where a page begins or ends in the middle of a verse the whole verse is given and the word position is stated in the section heading.
Lacunae: the surviving Paris leaves do not carry every verse of this sura. Only the verses listed in the sections below are on the folios shown; the rest of the sura is lost or preserved in other fragments of the same codex (St Petersburg Marcel 18, Vatican Ar. 1605/1, London KFQ 60) that are not included here.

1بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ الٓر تِلْكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍ 2رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ 3ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ 4وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ 5مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ 6وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ 7لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ 8مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ 9إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ 10وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ 11وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ 12كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ 13لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ 14وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ 15لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ 16وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّٰهَا لِلنَّٰظِرِينَ 17وَحَفِظْنَٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ 18إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌ 19وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ
1Alif. Lam. Ra. These are verses of the Scripture and a plain Reading. 2It may be that those who disbelieve wish ardently that they were Muslims. 3Let them eat and enjoy life, and let (false) hope beguile them. They will come to know! 4And We destroyed no township but there was a known decree for it. 5No nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind. 6And they say: O thou unto whom the Reminder is revealed, lo! thou art indeed a madman! 7Why bringest thou not angels unto us, if thou art of the truthful? 8We send not down the angels save with the Fact, and in that case (the disbelievers) would not be tolerated. 9Lo! We, even We, reveal the Reminder, and lo! We verily are its Guardian. 10We verily sent (messengers) before thee among the factions of the men of old. 11And never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him. 12Thus do We make it traverse the hearts of the guilty: 13They believe not therein, though the example of the men of old hath gone before. 14And even if We opened unto them a gate of heaven and they kept mounting through it, 15They would say: Our sight is wrong - nay, but we are folk bewitched. 16And verily in the heaven we have set mansions of the stars, and We have beautified it for beholders. 17And We have guarded it from every outcast devil, 18Save him who stealeth the hearing, and them doth a clear flame pursue. 19And the earth have We spread out, and placed therein firm hills, and caused each seemly thing to grow therein.
19وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ 20وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ 21وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ 22وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَسْقَيْنَٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَٰزِنِينَ 23وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ 24وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَ 25وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ 26وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ 27وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ 28وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ 29فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ 30فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ 31إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ 32قَالَ يَٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ 33قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ 34قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ 35وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ 36قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ 37قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ 38إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ 39قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ 40إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ 41قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ 42إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ 43وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ 44لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌ 45إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ 46ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ 47وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ 48لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ 49نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ 50وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُ 51وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ 52إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ
19And the earth have We spread out, and placed therein firm hills, and caused each seemly thing to grow therein. 20And we have given unto you livelihoods therein, and unto those for whom ye provide not. 21And there is not a thing but with Us are the stores thereof. And we send it not down save in appointed measure. 22And We send the winds fertilising, and cause water to descend from the sky, and give it you to drink. It is not ye who are the holders of the store thereof. 23Lo! and it is We, even We, Who quicken and give death, and We are the Inheritor. 24And verily We know the eager among you and verily We know the laggards. 25Lo! thy Lord will gather them together. Lo! He is Wise, Aware. 26Verily We created man of potter's clay of black mud altered, 27And the jinn did We create aforetime of essential fire. 28And (remember) when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am creating a mortal out of potter's clay of black mud altered, 29So, when I have made him and have breathed into him of My Spirit, do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him. 30So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together 31Save Iblis. He refused to be among the prostrate. 32He said: O Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate? 33He said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered! 34He said: Then go thou forth from hence, for lo! thou art outcast. 35And lo! the curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment. 36He said: My Lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised. 37He said: Then lo! thou art of those reprieved 38Till the Day of appointed time. 39He said: My Lord! Because Thou hast sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one, 40Save such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves. 41He said: This is a right course incumbent upon Me: 42Lo! as for My slaves, thou hast no power over any of them save such of the froward as follow thee, 43And lo! for all such, hell will be the promised place. 44It hath seven gates, and each gate hath an appointed portion. 45Lo! those who ward off (evil) are among gardens and watersprings. 46(And it is said unto them): Enter them in peace, secure. 47And We remove whatever rancour may be in their breasts. As brethren, face to face, (they rest) on couches raised. 48Toil cometh not unto them there, nor will they be expelled from thence. 49Announce, (O Muhammad) unto My slaves that verily I am the Forgiving, the Merciful, 50And that My doom is the dolorous doom. 51And tell them of Abraham's guests, 52(How) when they came in unto him, and said: Peace. He said: Lo! we are afraid of you.
52إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ 53قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ 54قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ 55قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَٰنِطِينَ 56قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ 57قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ 58قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ 59إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ 60إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ 61فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ 62قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ 63قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ 64وَأَتَيْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَٰدِقُونَ 65فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ 66وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَ 67وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ 68قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ 69وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ 70قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ 71قَالَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَٰعِلِينَ 72لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ 73فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ 74فَجَعَلْنَا عَٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ 75إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ 76وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُّقِيمٍ 77إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ 78وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَٰلِمِينَ 79فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ 80وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ 81وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ 82وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ 83فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ 84فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ 85وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ 86إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ 87وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ
52(How) when they came in unto him, and said: Peace. He said: Lo! we are afraid of you. 53They said: Be not afraid! Lo! we bring thee good tidings of a boy possessing wisdom. 54He said: Bring ye me good tidings (of a son) when old age hath overtaken me? Of what then can ye bring good tidings? 55They said: We bring thee good tidings in truth. So be not thou of the despairing. 56He said: And who despaireth of the mercy of his Lord save those who are astray? 57He said: And afterward what is your business, O ye messengers (of Allah)? 58They said: We have been sent unto a guilty folk, 59(All) save the family of Lot. Them we shall deliver every one, 60Except his wife, of whom We had decreed that she should be of those who stay behind. 61And when the messengers came unto the family of Lot, 62He said: Lo! ye are folk unknown (to me). 63They said: Nay, but we bring thee that concerning which they keep disputing, 64And bring thee the Truth, and lo! we are truth-tellers. 65So travel with thy household in a portion of the night, and follow thou their backs. Let none of you turn round, but go whither ye are commanded. 66And We made plain the case to him, that the root of them (who did wrong) was to be cut at early morn. 67And the people of the city came, rejoicing at the news (of new arrivals). 68He said: Lo! they are my guests. Affront me not! 69And keep your duty to Allah, and shame me not! 70They said; Have we not forbidden you from (entertaining) anyone? 71He said: Here are my daughters, if ye must be doing (so). 72By thy life (O Muhammad) they moved blindly in the frenzy of approaching death. 73Then the (Awful) Cry overtook them at the sunrise. 74And We utterly confounded them, and We rained upon them stones of heated clay. 75Lo! therein verily are portents for those who read the signs. 76And lo! it is upon a road still uneffaced. 77Lo! therein is indeed a portent for believers. 78And the dwellers in the wood indeed were evil-doers. 79So we took vengeance on them; and lo! they both are on a high-road plain to see. 80And the dwellers in Al-Hijr denied (Our) messengers. 81And we gave them Our revelations, but they were averse to them. 82And they used to hew out dwellings from the hills, (wherein they dwelt) secure. 83But the (Awful) Cry overtook them at the morning hour, 84And that which they were wont to count as gain availed them not. 85We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them save with truth, and lo! the Hour is surely coming. So forgive, (O Muhammad), with a gracious forgiveness. 86Lo! Thy Lord! He is the All-Wise Creator. 87We have given thee seven of the oft-repeated (verses) and the great Qur'an.
