Quran, Sura 69 (al-ḥāqqah) (Codex Parisino-petropolitanus)
Introduction
Sura 69 (al-ḥāqqah) as preserved on 2 folio sides of the Codex Parisino-petropolitanus (Paris, BnF Arabe 328 (a) and (b)), one of the oldest surviving Quran manuscripts, written in hijazi script on parchment, c. 650-750 AD. Each section below is one folio side, and the image shown is that exact page.
- Manuscript scan: the specific folio side from Gallica (Bibliotheque nationale de France IIIF). The folio's sura:verse range was taken from the Corpus Coranicum "Manuscripta Coranica" record for that page, which states the first and last word on the page; the folio numbers of both services were cross-checked by comparing the two images pixel by pixel.
- Original text: the Arabic of the Tanzil Project Uthmani text (CC BY 3.0), reproduced unchanged, verse by verse.
- English: Marmaduke Pickthall, The Meaning of the Glorious Koran (1930), public domain, verse by verse.
Orthography: the codex is written in scriptio defectiva: no vowel signs, almost no consonantal dots, long vowels often unwritten, and letter shapes that differ from the printed Uthmani text. The modern text given here therefore differs orthographically from what is on the folio while conveying the same reading; readers should expect, for example, the basmala and words such as qala to be spelled with fewer letters on the page.
Numbering: verse numbers follow the standard Kufan (Cairo 1924) division used by Corpus Coranicum, Tanzil and Pickthall. Early codices mark verse ends with ink dots that in places divide the text differently, so a verse count made on the page may not match these numbers exactly. In Tanzil's text the basmala opening each sura (except sura 9) is printed as part of verse 1. Where a page begins or ends in the middle of a verse the whole verse is given and the word position is stated in the section heading.
Lacunae: the surviving Paris leaves do not carry every verse of this sura. Only the verses listed in the sections below are on the folios shown; the rest of the sura is lost or preserved in other fragments of the same codex (St Petersburg Marcel 18, Vatican Ar. 1605/1, London KFQ 60) that are not included here.

3وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ 4كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌۢ بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ 5فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ 6وَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ 7سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى ٱلْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍ 8فَهَلْ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِيَةٍ 9وَجَآءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَن قَبْلَهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَٰتُ بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ 10فَعَصَوْا۟ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةً رَّابِيَةً 11إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلْمَآءُ حَمَلْنَٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْجَارِيَةِ 12لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنٌ وَٰعِيَةٌ 13فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ 14وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَٰحِدَةً 15فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ 16وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَهِىَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ 17وَٱلْمَلَكُ عَلَىٰٓ أَرْجَآئِهَا وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَٰنِيَةٌ 18يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَىٰ مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ 19فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ هَآؤُمُ ٱقْرَءُوا۟ كِتَٰبِيَهْ 20إِنِّى ظَنَنتُ أَنِّى مُلَٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ 21فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ 22فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ 23قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ 24كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ هَنِيٓـًٔۢا بِمَآ أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَيَّامِ ٱلْخَالِيَةِ 25وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَٰبِيَهْ 26وَلَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهْ 27يَٰلَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ 28مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنِّى مَالِيَهْ 29هَلَكَ عَنِّى سُلْطَٰنِيَهْ 30خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ 31ثُمَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ 32ثُمَّ فِى سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًا فَٱسْلُكُوهُ 33إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ 34وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ 35فَلَيْسَ لَهُ ٱلْيَوْمَ هَٰهُنَا حَمِيمٌ
3Ah, what will convey unto thee what the reality is! 4(The tribes of) Thamud and A'ad disbelieved in the judgment to come. 5As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the lightning. 6And as for A'ad, they were destroyed by a fierce roaring wind, 7Which He imposed on them for seven long nights and eight long days so that thou mightest have seen men lying overthrown, as they were hollow trunks of palm-trees. 8Canst thou (O Muhammad) see any remnant of them? 9And Pharaoh and those before him, and the communities that were destroyed, brought error, 10And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, therefor did He grip them with a tightening grip. 11Lo! when the waters rose, We carried you upon the ship 12That We might make it a memorial for you, and that remembering ears (that heard the story) might remember. 13And when the trumpet shall sound one blast 14And the earth with the mountains shall be lifted up and crushed with one crash, 15Then, on that day will the Event befall. 16And the heaven will split asunder, for that day it will be frail. 17And the angels will be on the sides thereof, and eight will uphold the Throne of thy Lord that day, above them. 18On that day ye will be exposed; not a secret of you will be hidden. 19Then, as for him who is given his record in his right hand, he will say: Take, read my book! 20Surely I knew that I should have to meet my reckoning. 21Then he will be in blissful state 22In a high garden 23Whereof the clusters are in easy reach. 24(And it will be said unto those therein): Eat and drink at ease for that which ye sent on before you in past days. 25But as for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say: Oh, would that I had not been given my book 26And knew not what my reckoning! 27Oh, would that it had been death! 28My wealth hath not availed me, 29My power hath gone from me. 30(It will be said): Take him and fetter him 31And then expose him to hell-fire 32And then insert him in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits. 33Lo! He used not to believe in Allah the Tremendous, 34And urged not on the feeding of the wretched. 35Therefor hath he no lover here this day,
36وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ 37لَّا يَأْكُلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْخَٰطِـُٔونَ 38فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ 39وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ 40إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ 41وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ قَلِيلًا مَّا تُؤْمِنُونَ 42وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ 43تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ 44وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ 45لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِٱلْيَمِينِ 46ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ ٱلْوَتِينَ 47فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَٰجِزِينَ 48وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ 49وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ 50وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ 51وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ 52فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
36Nor any food save filth 37Which none but sinners eat. 38But nay! I swear by all that ye see 39And all that ye see not 40That it is indeed the speech of an illustrious messenger. 41It is not poet's speech - little is it that ye believe! 42Nor diviner's speech - little is it that ye remember! 43It is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. 44And if he had invented false sayings concerning Us, 45We assuredly had taken him by the right hand 46And then severed his life-artery, 47And not one of you could have held Us off from him. 48And lo! it is a warrant unto those who ward off (evil). 49And lo! We know that some among you will deny (it). 50And lo! it is indeed an anguish for the disbelievers. 51And lo! it is absolute truth. 52So glorify the name of thy Tremendous Lord.
