Isaiah, Chapter 30 (Great Isaiah Scroll, 1QIsa-a)
Introduction
Isaiah 30 from the Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaa), the complete copy of Isaiah found in Cave 1 at Qumran in 1947 and now in the Shrine of the Book, Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Copied around 125 BCE, it is roughly a thousand years older than the Leningrad Codex, the oldest complete Masoretic manuscript. This chapter stands in col. XXIV (24), col. XXV (25) of the scroll's 54 columns.
- Scan: each section is shown with the actual column of the scroll that carries it, cropped from the Israel Museum / Google Art Project photograph of the whole scroll published on Wikimedia Commons (public domain). The column for every verse comes from the transcription itself, which records the column and line of each word.
- Hebrew: the scroll's own text, verbatim from the ETCBC dss Text-Fabric dataset (Jacobs, Naaijer and Roorda, from Martin G. Abegg Jr.'s transcription; CC BY-NC 4.0). This is not the Masoretic text: 1QIsaa uses a fuller spelling (for example לוא for לא, כיא for כי) and differs from the Masoretic text in a number of readings. No vowel points exist in the scroll and none are added. Marks: ⟨x⟩ letters the scribe added above the line, [x] modern reconstruction of text lost to damage, {{x}} letters cancelled by an ancient scribe, ⟪x⟫ an ancient correction, a dot under a letter (x̣) an uncertain reading, ···· four dots written in place of the divine name (Tetrapuncta).
- English: the King James Version (1611, public domain), verbatim from bible-api.com. The KJV translates the Masoretic text, so where the scroll reads differently the English will not match the Hebrew shown; the scroll's reading can be checked on the column image.

1Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: 2That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! 3Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. 4For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes. 5They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be an help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach. 6The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them. 7For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.
8עתה בוא כ⟨ו⟩תבהא על לוח אותם ועל ספר חקה ותהי ליומ אחרון לעד עד עולם 9כי עמ מרי הוא בנים כחשים בנים לוא אבו לשמוע תורת יהוה 10אשר אמרו לראים לוא תראו ולחוזים לוא תחזו לנו נכחות דברו לנו חלקות חזו מתלות 11תסירו מנו̣ דרך הטו מני ארח השביתו מפנינו את קדוש ישראל 12לכן כה אמר קדוש ישראל יען מאסכמ בדבר הזה ותבטחו בעושק ותעלוז ותשענו עליו 13לכן יהיה לכם הע{{ה}}⟨וו⟩ן הזה כפרץ נופל נבעה בחומה נשגבה אשר פתאם לפתע יבוא שברה 14ושברה כשבר נבל יוצרים כתות לוא יחמ⟨ו⟩לו ולוא ימצא במכתתו חרש לחתות אש מיקוד ולחסוף מים מגבה
8Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever: 9That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: 10Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: 11Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. 12Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: 13Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant. 14And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.
15כי כה אמר ⟨אדוני⟩ יהוה קדוש ישראל בשיבה ונחת תושעון בהשקט ובבטחה תהיה גבורתכם ולוא אביתם 16ותאמרו לוא כי אל סוס ננוס עלכן תנוסון ואל קל נרכב עלכן יקלו רוד̣פיכם 17אלף אחד מפני גערת אחד ומפני חמשה תנוסו עד אמ נותר̣תם כתרן על רא⟨ו⟩ש הר וכנס על הגבעה 18ולכן יחכה יהוה לחונכם ולכן ירים לרחמכם כיא אלוהי משפט יהוה אשרי כול חוכי לו 19כי עם בציון ישב ובירושלם בכו לוא תבכו חנון יחונך יהוה לקול זעקך כשמועתו ענך 20ונתן לכם אדוני לחמ צר ומי לחץ ולוא יכנפו עוד מוראיך והיו עיניך ראות את מוריך 21ואוזניך תשמענה דבר מאחריך לאמור זה הדרך לכו בו כי תיאמינו וכי תשמאילו
15For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not. 16But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift. 17One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill. 18And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him. 19For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee. 20And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: 21And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
22וטמיתם את צפוי פסילי כספך ואת אפודות מסכות זהבך תזרם כמו̣ דוה צא תאמר לו 23ונתן מטר זרעך אשר תזרע{{ך}} את ⟨ה⟩אדמה ולחם תבואת האדמה יהיה דשן ושמן זרעה מקניך ביומ ההוא כר נרהב 24והאלפים והעירים עובדי האדםה בליל חמץ יאכלו אשר יזרה ברחת ובמזרה 25והיה על כול הר גבה ועל כול גבעה נשאה פלגים יובלי מים בי⟨ו⟩ם הרג רב בנפל מגדלים 26והיה אור הלבנה כאור החמה ואור החמה יהיה שבעתים {{…}}כאור שבעת הימים ביום חבוש יהוה את שבר עמו ומחץ מכתו ירפא 27הנה שמ יהוה בא ממרחק בוער אפו וכבד משאה שפתיו מלאו זעם ולשונו כאש אוכלת
22Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. 23Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures. 24The oxen likewise and the young asses that ear the ground shall eat clean provender, which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan. 25And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. 26Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound. 27Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:
28ורוחו כנחל שוטפ עד צואר וחצה לנפה גואים בנפת שוא ורסן מתעה על לוחי⟨י⟩ עמים 29השיר ⟨ו⟩היה לכמה כליל התקדישו חג ושמחת לבב כהולך בחליל לבוא בהר יהוה אל צור ישראל 30השמיע השמיע יהוה את הוד קולו ונחת זרועו יראה בזעפ אפ ולהב אש אוכלה נפץ וזרם ואבן ברד 31כי מקול יהוה יחת אשור בשבט יאכה 32והיה כול מעבר מטה מוסדו אשר יניח יהוה עליו בתפים ובכנרות ובמלחמות תנופה נלחמ בה 33כי ערוך מאתמול תפתח גמ היה למלך יוכן הכיני והעמיקי הרחיבי מדורתה אש ועצים הרבה נשמת יהוה כנחל גפרית בערה בה
28And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err. 29Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel. 30And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones. 31For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod. 32And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it. 33For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.
